Century Village Seafood Fish Head Steamboat

YAY! Blogger is up and running so I'm back in business :D

Realised I haven't had fish steamboat since one of my first few posts on this blog so we went to try out this one.

They ran out of the fish we wanted so we ended up with garoupa (i think) with the steamboat for $38 -

Wasn't as great as the one I blogged about the last time but it's such comfort food that I couldn't help tucking into more than a few bowls of soup... soup was pretty flavourful and the fish was fresh.

Other dishes we tried here were pretty good too. The Home-style Tofu $12 was really soft and tasty -

The Prawn Rolls $8 were just ok -

A last minute addition was Cereal Sotong $10 which we just had to try coz it's the first time I've seen such a dish -

And it was pretty yummy! Didn't think cereal sotong would be a good idea but it surprisingly works... and of course I picked endlessly at the cereal bits.

An industrial park is a bit of an odd location for a restaurant, but that means parking is plentiful especially on weekend :)

Coca Steamboat

It was a Girl's Night Out... and working around various dietary constraints and on C's suggestion, we ended up eating here. Apparently this is one of C's favourite places to eat but none of us knew that!

While waiting for the rest to turn up, we munched on the appetizers : Mango Salad -

and Deep Fried Crabsticks -

No one seemed to like this but I thought it was not bad. Ended up eating most of the two plates that was on the table :P

We also got served Otah in a Spoon -

of which I ate, erm, two :P

The dinner buffet costs $32.50+++. After you order, the waiter will bring all the ingredients and will put all the ingredients in for you. I kinda forgot to take a picture of the ingredients so made up by taking pictures of the steamboat itself. The first round was full of veggies -

C also ordered quite a few servings of enoki mushrooms which I love, and ate lots of.

Later we added in prawns and other meats to add flavour to the soup -

One of the specialities here is the fish paste, which I frankly don't see what the fuss is about. What were all loved were the finely sliced beef that PM cooked to perfection for us. They don't serve this on the onset so make sure you order it.

What this place is also famous for is its chilli sauce -

which I have to agree is pretty good, seeing how I had two whole bowls of it :)

A pretty good deal if you can eat more than the average person. Besides the thinly sliced beef, the other ingredients are pretty mediocre. Keep in mind for a rainy day when bubbling hot steamboat is just what hits the spot.

Yet Con

Had a craving for Korean and wanted to go to Jeju but it was full *Sigh* Wandered along Purvis Street and ended up eating at Yet Con instead... it more than made up for missing out on Korean food :)

Talk about old school - walking into this place makes you feel like you've walked into a time warp... everything looks like it's straight out from the 70s! This is a family-run establishment so everyone who works there is at least 60 years old.

We were not too sure how the seating goes... Luckily the guy in front of us was in the know - he said that whoever comes first just gets the next available table. So an informal queue forms around the entrance and you basically seat yourself. We were there at 7pm and didn't have to wait too long for a table - the turnover's pretty fast.

Here's what we ordered - steamboat (beef and seafood) and chicken rice for two persons. Everything was good! The beef cooked in the steamboat was tender and tasty despite the seeming lack of seasoning. The seafood plate consisted of fish, squid, cockles and prawns - all very fresh. I tried drinking the soup after we had finish eating and it was face-scrunchingly salty from all the stuff we'd put in it :D

The chicken was good too but I could not stop eating the chicken rice - could be because I haven't had chicken rice in a long time, but this one just tasted amazing! The chilli was surprisingly non-spectacular though...

We ate till we were totally stuffed and had to literally roll ourselves out the door. All for a grand total of $27! Plenty of other tze-char dishes on the menu to try the next time. Just have to remember not to mind the surly old folk working there... and they may be a little slow but they do get the job done.

Whampoa Food Street (KENG) Fish Head Steamboat Eating House

*Photo added!*

Ok, so yesterday's weather was hot hot hot and not really suited to having steamboat... but I've been dying to try this for so long that I just had to have it despite the weather :)

I've passed by this place many times, and even my sister has pointed this place out to me as one of the good places to have fish steamboat. This place is so popular that the tables actually spill out the back door onto the alley behind!

Luckily I was with a friend who could the ordering - I am absolutely lost when it comes to ordering Chinese food. She ordered fish steamboat with red garoupa $30 (for four persons), prawn roll (hei zou) $6, spinach with mushrooms $12.

So all this time, when people talked about fish steamboat, I always thought it was like traditional steamboat where you have to cook the food yourself... so I was (pleasantly) suprised when the steamboat came - with all the food in it already cooked! Yay, no need to wait for food to cook! We could tuck in straight away! :)

The steamboat was heated by charcoal - that's so traditional, I don't think I've ever seen steamboat done this way! The soup looked milky and was really tasty - no doubt soaking in all the flavour of the fish. In the soup there was countless chunks of very fresh fish, lots of chinese cabbage (which I kept eating :) ... and yam. Eek, not my favourite thing, so I avoided it like crazy.

Here's the best part - like bak kut teh, the soup can also be topped up :) Sigh, I think I must have had like 5 bowls of soup...

The prawn roll (hei zou) was really good too. For those who've never had this, it's kinda like ngoh hiang, but with prawns and turnips. Crunchy and meaty! The tze char here looks pretty good too, going from how satisfied the other customers looked.

Including drinks it came up to about $14 per person. Very reasonable price for a very good meal!

Note : I did take pictures, with my own camera too... but couldn't find the cable to connect the camera to the computer and hence could not upload the photos. Will buy the cable soon. Photos akan datang :)
